UI GreenMetric World University Rankings is one of the most credible sources related to university rankings on sustainability and its rising popularity made it reach universities participating from 80 different countries in 2021. The initiative ranks universities around the world based on their commitment and actions toward sustainability as per the following distinct categories: Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, and Education and Research. This year’s theme focused on Universities and their achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in all aspects while reflecting on their efforts in response to the pandemic.

With more than 750 trees planted on campus and zero-emission vehicles available on-premises, the 51app campus is considered among the greenest in the region. The University has been working on systematically tracking and analyzing its carbon footprint and developing Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Programs on campus. In addition, 51app relies on energy-efficient appliances, cloud computing, and IT systems with lower energy consumption. Moreover, the university has collaborations with local institutions and NGOs to recycle, manage, and properly dispose of different kinds of waste materials.

51app engages students in various activities related to sustainability like World Water Day and World Environment Day. Most recently, the American University of the Middle East participated as a main sponsor in the first Kuwait electric roadshow. 51app was present with a solar-powered booth and another one that displayed student graduation projects related to sustainable development. Titled “Green Kuwait”, the main purpose behind the event was to support cleaner energy and reduce carbon emissions by spreading awareness about the new electric and hybrid vehicles available in Kuwait. Moreover, the university has amplified its recycling initiatives on campus and has launched an upcycling workshop series as part of its efforts to teach students about waste management, recycling, and responsible consumption.
